My name is Katherine and I have a Masters qualification in person centred counselling and psychotherapy practice (Level 7). I am registered with the BACP and NMC.

My background

Alongside my counselling role I have worked in a specialist Health Visiting and Family Nurse role supporting individuals and families for the last 13 years and have a vast experience supporting individuals that have experienced anxiety, depression, domestic abuse, postnatal depression, PTSD, health conditions, bereavement and addiction.

Before this role I worked as an ITU nurse supporting individuals and families through the immediate impact of trauma and bereavement and have a deep understanding of the importance of having a supportive presence in times of crisis.

I am qualified in motivational interviewing – This is a counselling style that can empower and strengthen an individual’s motivation and commitment to change, it can be used to help support clients to figure out what changes they are able to and would like to make to improve their circumstances and empower individuals to take the steps to get there.

I have also completed The Newcastle Infant Mental Health Course - What is this? This is an intensive course for professionals that works to promote parent and infant mental health and development. This supports my practice with parents and infants to promote healthy growing relationships, supports with bonding and building strong attachments.

I am currently working as a sessional lecturer at Liverpool John Moores University, teaching the module "Working Therapeutically with Children and Families".

The Solihull Approach

I am also qualified in The Solihull Approach – This is a mental health and well-being support approach that can help emotionally support individuals, parents, and infants to form nurturing relationships through reflective thinking. This works on 3 principles’:

  • Containment – This is a process supports individuals to understand their own emotions, feel emotionally contained and able to process feelings, communicate emotions and feel understood. It helps us to understand how we can do this for ourselves and others around us without feeling overwhelmed.
  • Reciprocity – This is a process that helps us to recognise the patterns in our relationships, how we engage, interact and disengage from others in our relationships. Learning about how we know we are in sync with each other and when we are not and how to repair this in relationships.
  • Behaviour management – This is a process that supports us to learning to read behaviour as a form of communication and how this relates to emotional need’s.

The Solihull approach helps us to think about our responses to a situation guided by a better understanding of our own feelings and emotions. This helps us to figure out what might help our relationships going forward.

Skills development as your therapist

I am passionate to ensure as your therapist I am always expanding and refining my skills to ensure I offer the most up to date and effective therapeutic experience for my clients.

At present I am currently in training to additionally deliver Video Interactive Guidance (VIG) Therapy which is a specialist therapy that supports parent-infant relationships:

This therapy is a strengths-based model that uses short video clips of the client with their baby/child to help them recognise when they have demonstrated attuned, supportive parenting responses within their interactions.

Often when a parent is experiencing anxiety or depression, they are unable to see or recognise expressions of love or joy from their baby in their interactions and can feel the heavy weight of self-criticism or not feeling good enough.

VIG offers a unique and highly effective opportunity for a parent to see themselves through the eyes of their child, providing a corrective perceptual experience of their parenting that they can build upon to promote growing healthy relationships with their child.

Sometimes the way out of postnatal depression and anxiety can be to see yourself through the eyes of your child.
